Reality of being an interior designer (My POV)

Transitioning to the real world? I’m sorry but I need to burst that bubble. This is my POV after almost 1.5 years in it, definitely not a field for everyone.

1. It’s not all that pretty & fancy like what you imagined. It’s more than the pretty outlook, there’s so much more into it.

2. Devils lies in the details, attention to detail is crucial

3. When you think your drawing is done, it’s never done- why: changes from client, seniors, boss and it’s never ending unless the client is finally satisfied with it.

4. Your design concept will be overridden by superiors or seniors, so don’t expect to get the credit when starting off.

5. Timeline and deadlines are tight because time = money. The competitive landscape is also to blame, if you don’t do it some other firm will.

6. OT & long hours - once you’re in the field you really need your big why on why are you doing this.

7. Less flexibility compared to other jobs out there, it highly depends on your company and rank.

8. Clients are demanding as heck- especially when you’re in the commercial design sector.

9. Teamwork is crucial- if you don’t work well with different perspective and ideas, it’ll be hard. You need to be open to criticism and feedback ( which sucks I know)

10. You might find it very interesting when studying but reality of the job can be very different once there’s an actual site involved.

11. Spend most of the time behind the screen drafting, doing test fits and documentations. Sometimes client meetings, site visits and photo shoots after space is done -the only fun part.

12. I think AI might replace this field sooner or later (Just my POV)

13. You need lots of passion- passion or money you would ask? Passion to really survive and sustain long term without the design burnout.

14. You gotta wear multiple hats as an ID. Get slapped by problems problems and problems everyday.

It’s not so fancy and pretty after all right?
