Since it’s #Lemon8SG #9to5 series. I thought to share a part of my job as an Interior Designer/Stylist.

In my current job, I work both as a designer and a stylist (when required). Many people might think it’s a really fun job (it truly is) but there’s also a lot that goes behind it.

5 things you should know about an Interior Stylist

if you’re keen on being one.

1. Understanding the project and clientele well.

As an Interior stylist you need to know and understand both your project and the clientele well. Who are the potential sales target especially if your client is a business trying to sell the unit away. You also need to know the dimensions and spaces in the project that will potentially help you to sell most when you style. Also, dimensions are very important as you don’t want to spend the money buying things that are not going to fit in terms of size or style.

2. Be practical

As much as aesthetic is essential in selling the space. Practicality plays a part. The client who will visit / own this unit would prefer to see a lifestyle that is visible rather than one that is all fluff and unusable/ unliveable. With that said, showflats are of a different spectrum and are often required to be styled more creativity and imaginatively.

3. Shop on a budget

As much as we get to shop, there’s always a budget to something and often there are project with the least styling budget for a big amount of space. We have to balance what’s more important to have and what’s not so important to have.

4. Keeping an inventory

at the end of every styling projects, we are required to submit an inventory/description list for the client to do a check. This is actually the most troublesome part of the project as we need to be accountable for every single piece of the item in the project.

5. Know the latest trend

To be a good stylist, you need to know the trend in the interior scene. What can sell at first sight and what’s a taboo that should be avoided. It’s always good to know the answers before getting questioned by your clients and bosses. Also, as an Interior stylist the job also require knowledge of furniture brands especially when a client request for the brand to be imported in for their home.
