I almost went bald from tufting😫|| tips to note✨

Hi friends💖 Tufting is becoming a super trendy #Couple activity these days and after much probing, my bf brought me to tufting for my birthday a month ago! ✨ Being new to this activity, there are a lot of things you need to know about tufting before you go ahead and do it, so just thought I’d walk you through my experience and some tips w y’all 💫

𝗧𝗟𝗗𝗥: 𝗗𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝗳𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿 𝗼𝗳 𝟯𝟴.𝟵 𝗱𝗲𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗰𝗲𝗹𝗰𝗶𝘂𝘀 (yes I was sick but I insisted on going😂) 𝗜 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗶𝘁𝘆!

🪡𝗪𝗛𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗦 𝗧𝗨𝗙𝗧𝗜𝗡𝗚🧵

✨ [Def] act of needle punching through a backing material in the form of a loop

🪡𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗦𝗦 + 𝗧𝗜𝗣𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗬𝗢𝗨🧵

1️⃣ Prior to the session, choose a cartoon artwork that you’d like to create a rug for

✨ The boss will help you prep and trace it so that you can follow the pattern during the session itself

⚠️ To make the tufting process easier, choose artworks that have less curves, more surface area & less details (I.e we wanted to write each other’s names but it wasn’t possible!)

2️⃣ Visit About You Studio

✨ unlimited colours for you to choose from

✨ the boss will teach you how to do it

⚠️ some interesting things he told us:

— it’s easier to go from up to down, and if you’re a left hander, go from left to right for a straight line

— you need to use a needle to insert the yarn into the gun, which he will demonstrate

— for my bf’s, due to the “shadows” and smaller surface area, he had to create a base for the cartoon — which means more work for my bf

— you don’t really have to fill up all the gaps, it may look “unfilled” on one side but when you flip it around you’ll see that it’s actually quite filled

— make sure that you don’t under-do but also don’t over-do, if it’s too thick the rug will roll up

3️⃣ Spend some time to familiarize yourself with the gun!

4️⃣ Tuft away!

⚠️ make sure to always put your feet onto the base of the canvas — I assume this prevents the canvas from toppling

⚠️ make sure the gun is off before you do something else

⚠️ tufting does require some form of strength: you have to push the needle in hard to make sure that the threads are tight & firm

5️⃣ Once the tufting is done, ensure that all gaps have actually been filled on the other side

✨ boss will help you with this!

6️⃣ After everything has been done, you will be given glue and you’ll have to spread it across the done rug. This is so that it can be pasted on a grey base. After which, you’ll have to dry it with a dryer

7️⃣ When the rug has been well-pasted, they will then get you to shave off the excess fur of the rug

And then you’re done!

𝗟𝗘𝗧’𝗦 𝗧𝗔𝗟𝗞 𝗔𝗕𝗢𝗨𝗧 𝗠𝗬 𝗘𝗫𝗣𝗘𝗥𝗜𝗘𝗡𝗖𝗘 👄

💖 It was a fulfilling & therapeutic experience making our own rugs! I think it could be a good #LoveMyself activity actually - my unartistic bf was super amazed that he actually successfully tuft out a good-looking rug, talk about self-esteem booster 🤣

🙃 Nonetheless, it was quite tiring and I wouldn’t advice for you to do it if you’re feeling sick or dont really have strength… I felt like I was going to faint because I stood up for 4 hours straight. Thankfully my muscle man BF helped me out at the end 💪🏻 There are also minor dangers - my hair actually got stuck in the gun🔫

🙃 Another downside is that the activity is quite expensive at $300 - our rugs are just sitting in our room instead of being used because we’re afraid that it’ll get dirty. The quality is also so-so only.

Now of course, there are multiple studios and I have no idea why my boyfriend booked the session at About You. While the location isn’t that convenient, I personally thought that the service was on point 💯 The boss was super patient, friendly and helpful! We made small talk with him (ie understand why he’s doing this business). There were a few occasions when we broke the needle but he was super chill about it 😅 I also couldn’t do some parts aka the curves, and he very kindly assisted! Plus, I love the fact that you can choose unlimited colours 😊 Not all places offer that! 😚

All in all, with the limited activities in tiny SG, this is a once in a life-time activity that you should definitely try out with your best friend / partners! ✨ But just once is enough la hor 🤣 Are there any other activities that you guys think are worth checking out? Do share with me! 💖
