It has been all over my fyp, and I decided to give it a chance. With so many positive reviews, I was initially hesitant, but now I understand why this book is gaining popularity 📈📈

𝐒𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲:

👉🏼google version: the story follows a couple named Harriet and Wyn, who broke up months ago but pretend to still be together for their annual weeklong vacation with their best friends.

👉🏼my own version: Harriet is a people-pleaser who goes to great lengths to ensure others are happy and proud of her. This often conflicts with her own desires and needs. She aims to please her parents by staying in med school (even tho she realises she hates it years later). she also maintains the façade of being with her ex during their annual meetup to keep things comfortable for her friends, even though it makes her uncomfortable. As the story unfolds, her character development is evident as she learns to confront discomfort and assert her own needs and wants.

I was truly struck by how much I related to Harriet's character. Like her, I tend to be a people-pleaser, and I found her struggles highly relatable. It was heart-wrenching to witness her suppress her feelings for the sake of avoiding conflicts. I confess, I found myself emotional at different chapters of the book 😭. for the first time, i was able to feel how a fictional character felt through words. there was a lot of growth between the friend group also which i really loved. it just shows how much they cared for each other 💕

Emily Henry's writing style is easily digestible and engaging. The narrative alternates between present-day events and Harriet's "happy place" which is the past. While I initially found this approach confusing, it eventually comes together neatly at the conclusion, where the present also becomes her happy place.
