What the military is actually like

So, let’s get real

✈️ free school! (My favorite part)! I’m getting to become a nurse… for FREE!

✈️ besties. Some are from basic training, some from tech school, some from base. They really do get you on a different level than any other non-military member can

Okay, there are the warm and fuzzies… but here’s what you’re probably looking for:

✈️ they tell at you during BMT & Tech school. They drop your bags (dump everything out), perform middle-of-the-night checks, you take turn on EC duty (overnight security, no extra sleep to make up for it), have a limited amount of time to eat, 40 girls have to get in the shower, out, and changed within 10 minutes. You only get your letters/mail/time to write back home/send mail if you earn it.

✈️ you’re in class most of the day. In a classroom, with your brother flight. You take a big exam at the end of BMT.

✈️ you work out as a group with your brother flight & cousin flights 6 days a week (Mon-Sat). You will alternate strength days and run days. Definitely build up a baseline of endurance. But if you aren’t super fit, it’s okay. Really, you get so used to it. Progression happens quickly with consistency, which is enforced. Initial PT test, a 3 week, and a final 6 week. Some days you will run in formation, so truly work on training yourself every time you PT. Sunday is your free day where you can go to a service of choice or stay back at the dorm. You won’t have a formal MTI those days, but they may drop in to make sure you are doing what you’re supposed to/not asleep.

✈️ it isn’t like the movies anymore. They cannot put their hands on you.

✈️ female MTIs can come in any time. Male MTIs have to be announced before entering, as they are the opposite sex, and to ensure everyone is decent before they enter.

✈️ reporting statements: you will report yourself to whoever you’re speaking to (other than your peers) before talking by saying: “Sir/Ma’am, trainee ____ (your last name) reports as ordered” and they will give you permission to speak.

✈️ you will be assigned a detail that you will clean twice a day: day room, latrine, laundry, etc. these get inspected, so you have to clean well.

✈️ it’ll help if you know the Airman’s Creed & Air Force song (both sang every morning) and rank structure BEFORE going to basic training. It’ll lessen the mental load you need to memorize everything else.

✈️ be ready to listen, follow instructions, get get critiqued.
