Yin yoga is a restorative kind of practice where you slow things down, hold poses for longer and tune in to your inner mental state. BUT THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT IT IS EASY!!! As city dwellers who are constantly plugged in, we tend to have ailments like tech neck, stiff thumbs, sore shoulders and tight hips. And holding these restorative poses corner us into stretching out the stiffest and deepest of muscles so it CAN GET UNCOMFY. Counterintuitive, BUT ALL THE MORE WE SHOULD DO IT FOR OUR WELL BEING!

You don’t have to be a F45/BFT superstar, you don’t have to be a yoga guru, you don’t have to be a martial arts practitioner or sports enthusiast. Neither do you need lululemon or alo yoga workout gear. You literally just need yourself (doesn’t matter even if you’re in your ugliest state) to move into certain positions, without even having to push yourself too much. 60-70% is all the effort you need, and gravity will take care of the rest. You get to out with increased flexibility~

There’re definitely other ways to release tension in your muscles, but I love me a yin practice every now and then. Holding poses for 2-3 minutes helps me stretch out the tightest of muscles and discover aches in my body that I never knew existed. I particularly enjoy being assisted to get deeper into my stretches so I would actually pay to go for yin classes where teachers help to assist!

We all think stretching is easy, but once you hold a pose for long enough, trust me. The discomfort bubbles at first and then tugs at you in full force. It can get really uncomfortable (depending on where you how tight you are), but yin yoga trains you to simply notice the sensations within your body and to sit with your discomfort. We tend to shun physical discomfort as much as we tend to shun emotional discomfort, because it is easier to indulge in hedonistic pleasures, easier to feel positive emotions. But.. unpleasant emotions, feelings, sensations. They’re a part of us too and deserve their time of the day right? We shouldn’t have to hide from them :)
