top tips to become a Master Shifu ✨

when I put in my application last year, I didn't expect to receive an offer for a local uni Master's course!! 😱 super blessed to be offered as a private uni student, and my GPA wasn't exactly the best either 😅!

✨️ things to consider before applying for Master's

I applied for NTU Master's due to its subsidised rates by MOE, which makes it really affordable. the part-time option was also important for me because I do not want to quit my job to go back and study 💀

here's what I did to maximize my chances of getting an offer:

1️⃣ look at your desired course requirements

some courses have minimum degree requirements + grade requirements (e.g., honours or equivalent). I already looked at several course requirements for different Master's when I was studying my Bachelor's. most Master's courses require a distinction grade for my type of degree. I was just shy of distinction (no honours), but i still applied to try!!

2️⃣ provide ALL the required documents

for each application part, they might require personal statements, writeups of what motivates you, why you will do well in the course, or why you want to study the course. provide all of the required, but it is best to provide those, even if it's not required!!

my writeups applied my work experience to the courses taught and why it will help me as a software engineer in the future. it also covered what I did OUTSIDE of work to show my passion.

3️⃣ recommendation letters!!

if you don't have good grades, your work experience has to SHINE ✨️ recommendation letters are super important as it shows that you have good relations with your bosses (probably also shows you are a good worker). best is to get the manager/team lead who works with you directly and can vouch for your work ethic.

usually, they will be too busy to craft the whole letter, so write the template, provide a few pointers, and they can edit and send it to you via WORK email 😊 this way, it is a proof that your boss referring you is working in that company, and saves the staff time from calling to verify!

luckily for me, I stayed in my previous company for a decent amount of time and was on good terms with my team lead.
