hey zesties, it's masters application szn, and I was considering enrolling in a masters program π There were so many considerations I had before putting in the application, so I collated my thoughts and penned them here π
What is your purpose for applying for a Masters program?
Do you want more salary? Do you want to be promoted? Are you unsure what you want to work as? By knowing your "why," you will better understand whether it is worth your time and money to pursue a Masters degree.
One of the reasons why I personally want to pursue a Masters degree is to further my professional skills and to get a local university qualification, which better helps in promotion opportunities in the public sector.
π°Fees
How are you going to fund it? Is your company willing to sponsor your school fees?
This allows you to calculate when you'll get back the cost of the fees of the Masters Degree. E.g. if you get 2k extra a month in salary, you will get back your 20k investment in the Masters Degree in 10 months. and the rest of your life is PROFIT π€
π¬Research/πCoursework
Research is usually an independent, significant project. Usually, it is not recommended if not on scholarship by the university, as research requires a lot of funding. A research based Masters degree allows you to proceed to PhD (Research) which may be useful if you are planning to pursue a career in academia.
Coursework is usually learning a set number of modules, usually including some management modules, to gain more knowledge in the related field and help you be promoted at work or fight for more salary.
Part Time vs. Full Time
βοΈ Part-time Pros
You can study when you work full-time. (timing for classes usually fall after working hours e.g. 6.30pm or on weekends.)
Cheaper (you will not make use of school facilities as much as full-time students).
βοΈ Part-time Cons
Ineligible to join hall
Less time to join CCA
Longer study term
βοΈ Full-time Pros
Shorter study term
Option to join hall
Time to join CCA
βοΈ Full-time Cons
More expensive
Unable to work a usual full-time job/can only work part time
Do note that each course has its own minimum requirements, do check before paying the application fee πΈ
Was there anything else you considered before pursuing a Masters Degree? π€ since my company is funding courses for me, I figured why not just apply and see how IF I get accepted π€£ NTU is super hard to get in, though. my colleague applied and only got 1 out of 4 of his choices...
