hihi! as many of you know, tteok has been a rising foodie trend in sg, particularly the one located at beauty world, boseong rice cake.

however, me and my friend only had time to visit on a sunday (boseong rice cake is closed on sundays 😞) so we opt to try another tteok shop, walnut tree aka hodunamu. it is located at outram park which is nearer to us compared to beauty world.

it is only a 5 min walk from outram park mrt 🚊 exit 5 and there are many cute cafes and shop houses around the area for you to explore! 🤩🤩

we reached around 11am so the tteok and packet food were still warm and there were still a lot of choices so i would recommend to visit early! they also offer many different banchans/side dishes such as kimchi and bean sprouts and bentos and gimbaps! we bought 4 different tteok, which is $6 each (if i’m not wrong) and jeon/ fried pancake $10 to try. hence, our total damage is $34!

⋆˚✿˖° REVIEW ⋆˚✿˖°

1. ggultteok/ rice cake with honey filling:

5 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

definitely my favourite one among the 4 that we tried! this reminds me of sg’s ondeh ondeh in the sense that the syrup pops in your mouth like how ondeh ondeh does. the filling is made out of sesame and honey 🍯. the texture and thickness of the tteok compliments the sweetness of the honey and sesame syrup vv well! there are 12 pieces inside so each is about 50 cents, which is pretty worth it to me! i think i ate about 4-5 of it in one sitting 🤭🤭 would definitely buy this again! side note: i don’t think the colours of the tteok meant different flavours? it all tasted the same to me.

2. injeolmi tteok/ soybean powdered rice cake:

3/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

this reminded me of another sg dessert muah chee, mainly because of the powder at the top. for this tteok, is it covered in soybean powder which is suppose to be nutty and sweet. however, i was a bit disappointed by this, the powder on top and the tteok didn’t really mesh well together imo? it felt like 2 separate components if that makes any sense. the texture and chewiness of the tteok is very nice tho but i don’t think i would repurchase this again 🫤

3. jeolpyeon/ pounded tteok:

2 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

tbh im not 100% sure this is the name of the tteok but you can refer to the pics 😬😬 anyways we bought it cause we thought that this was also filled with honey or brown sugar but it was just plain tteok with sesame oil. its very chewy i really liked the texture of it but there was nothing much to it since its just plain tteok. i ended up eating this with the kimchi jeon as a substitute for rice 😬😬 probably my least favourite out of the 4 tteoks.

4. mujigae tteok/ rainbow rice cake:

3 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

this rainbow rice cake consists of 5 different layers with 4/5 different flavours (if i’m not wrong), mugwort, cinnamon, pumpkin or white bean (im not sure), sweet potato and original. the texture for this rice cake is very interesting bc it resembles a cake but it’s very very chewy! the flavour reminded me a bit of fa gao (the colourful one). this one isn’t too sweet so if you’re not a fan of sweet things you can give this a go! i may repurchase this again if i’m craving for it but it’s not my personal favourite 😅

5. bonus: jeon/ korean fried pancake ($10):

4 /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐:

there were 2 different flavours of jeon inside the box: kimchi and chives with seafood (octopus/squid). i would recommend reheating this if you’re not eating it straight away so that it’s still warm and crispy! i preferred the kimchi jeon to the chives jeon, mainly bc im not a big fan of seafood so i enjoyed the kimchi one more. they’re pretty generous with the toppings inside the jeon too!

all in all, i think the texture and the chewiness of the tteok is perfect as it it not too hard or soft. ofc i hv not tried any other types of tteok prior to this so this are all my first impressions and opinions of them!
