This is definitely a hot take, but these things are not “healthy” for you, as there may be labeled to be. Let’s talk about it:

Açai bowls: I used to think these were healthy! I had one every single day during the summer of 2020. I would’ve eaten them for breakfast lunch and dinner, had I not learned that they are completely FULL of sugar! And carbs! And high fat! That’s it! Which means it’s very high calorie & nearly zero protein. So instead of this healthy breakfast bowl, as it marketed, it really should be treated as a dessert that you have occasionally!

Sushi rolls: I love sushi, it is an occasional thing for me now because it’s literally just carbs & sodium (soy sauce) and the tiniest bit of protein. I used to be able to eat 30 rolls in one sitting, but I was completely missing out on a large portion of protein - not realizing that’s it’s just carbs & high fat with the spicy mayo.

Mocktails: personally, I don’t drink, so I love myself a good Mocktail… because of the aesthetic having a drink, you know? Well, my new discovery is having me think twice about wasting those calories… because they are legit just sugar! They are mainly made with fruit juices or syrups… and is probably just as bad as drinking, drinking an alcoholic drink!

All of these are great to have in MODERATION, or as a cheat meal, but definitely not something you should be consuming lot of on a weekly basis…!

‼️ADDED INFO: A LOT OF YOU HAVE COMMENTS ON THIS WHICH IS GREAT! I’M HAPPY TO TALK ABOUT IT‼️

Q - “You’re just unhealthy, these are healthy. And why does everyone think everything that’s not high protein isn’t good for you?”

A - That’s not the case. I USED to have a very unhealthy food relationship 5 years ago until I LEARNED what was good for you & became a PT. The main reason behind this post is to inform people who have misconceptions about what is or isn’t “healthy”. ‼️If you learn one thing today let it be this: I believe this is why the US has an obesity rate of 40.3% - people are uninformed & there are unfortunately a lot of added sugars in things like acai bowls, bread, juices, cereals, etc. You assume an açaí bowl is healthy… but it contains between 40-62 grams of SUGAR! That’s DOUBLE the recommended amount of only 25g a day. But you wouldn’t know that unless you checked the nutrition label, etc. Same with mocktails (it’s normally fruit juice/ syrups - pure sugar). Now addressing the protein question- Not only is protein good for: muscle building, weight/ fat loss, bone health, amino acids, and contains antibodies to help your immune system… BUT eating protein can actually help your blood sugar. Eating protein first, before any carbs on your plate, can actually help your body avoid a blood sugar spike and keep insulin levels from rising too high after a meal. It also keeps you fuller longer & can help you achieve your dream body. So for a sushi roll (great cheat meal but it’s high fat & carbs - but hardly any protein (unless you get sashimi) - so that is why I think it’s great in moderation. All in all, just be more aware of the things you’re putting into your body - not everything labeled “healthy” is healthy. & protein is so good for you 😉

Q - “It’s healthy in moderation”

A - YES! I completely agree & already had stated that in my caption. Now it is in bold ;) I preach balance. Everything (donuts, cake, cookies, fries) ARE perfectly fine in moderation. I’m a foodie and enjoy plenty myself!

Q - “It’s healthier than ordering other things like a burger, froyo, or an alcoholic drink”

A - This is a HUGE misconception, and I’m glad someone said something. People think ordering a salad at a restaurant is going to be healthier than a burger. Well… sometimes that’s not true. The burger could easily have less calories & more protein than any salad - especially if you’re unaware of the calories of the dressing, cheese, bacon, nuts, etc toppings (which add up pretty fast). Froyo on an average has much less sugar than an açaí bowl. However, I do agree that a mocktail is healthier than alcohol. (Even if it has more sugar… alcohol is poison for your body - check out the Huberman Labs podcast for more info). It also depends on where you’re getting these things, the brand, and the ingredients. Whole, real, foods are always the best for you - so prioritize that over processed foods!
