recently i’ve been hearing so many people going to Korea but hardly hear of anyone visiting DMZ, which was a HUGE highlight of my trip + KEY part of kr’s history 🥹 so here’s a detailed guide + my experience there!

WHY U MUST VISIT

- it’s rly exclusive cuz when i went in Mar 2023, the DMZ limited the number of people visiting the area (< 600 visitors were allowed in per day)

- many of the attractions aren’t featured here bc it was a heavily guarded zone, and the soldiers didn’t allow us to take pics 🥲 so u have to visit to get the full experience!

- there’s a local tour guide who speaks english, mine was super kind and explains everything from A to Z + she helped me take so many pics ❤️

- it has such a rich history!

ABOUT

Demilitarized Military Zone (DMZ) is a strip of land that divides south and north korea into half, est. after the 1950s Korean War. find out more abt it here!

TIMING

- it’s a full day tour from 8am-4pm local time (but tbh worth the day spent)

WHERE TO BOOK

u MUST book a tour to get there, book here!

MY EXPERIENCE

Imjingak:

- we were first picked up from our hotels at 6am and it was a 2h bus ride from seoul -> Imjingak Peace Park (a tourist site). i was so tired i slept in the bus LOL

after reaching we also visited the Bridge of Freedom (2nd pic), where North Korean refugees had and could cross over to the South. also got to see the commemorative statues of Truman (ex-US president) who helped defend SK thru the war.

- we also saw the Comfort women statues that was korean women’s protest against the brutal oppression of the Japanese during WW2 (3rd pic)😢 seeing this in the flesh rly made me appreciate my peaceful life more

- i also bought North Korean Won that are out of production (1997edition) as gifts and souvenirs from a low key shop🫢 it’s a closed currency so u can’t use it to buy anything, but def a cool memento! (4th pic)

Third Tunnel:

- afterwards we took an open air train into the Third Tunnel (2nd pic), which was ~300m underground. but we weren’t allowed to take any photos inside tho. tunnel was so narrow that we had to wear helmets to protect our heads!

context: the tunnel was created by the explosion of dynamites, designed for a surprise infiltration & attack on Seoul from North Korea 🥶

Dora Observatory [RIGHT NEXT TO NK!]

- located right at the edge of the DMZ, and we caught a glimpse of North Kr’s countryside (Gaesong City)!!!! saw Kim’s (ex NK president) memorial hall + NK flag (see pic 1,5,6) 😲

- my tour guide offered to help me take a pic w a korean NSF 🤭 i said yes.. was the most awkward 3sec of my life BAHAHHAAHAH ded

- to end the trip we even got a tour around the people living in the DMZ (📍Peace Village), and i got to try the local’s favourite: soybean ice cream 😋 super unique flavour and was good!

OVERALL + REFLECTIONS

cldnt cover all parts bc there were so many things in the tour but hopefully this not sponsored guide is ur sign to go!!!!

as an A level history student it was like watching my history textbooks come alive 🥹 going thr rly have a much more in depth insight into the 1950s Korean war amidst the Cold war landscape!

learning ab the K war also rly made me rly thankful that im a 2000s baby in SG who didn’t have to experience such a traumatic event 🥺
