What has working in healthcare taught me?
I did law in Poly but my major in University was Psychology. So naturally, I wanted to work in a position that would allow me to hone my skills in something psychology-based. This is what Iβve learnt so farβπ»
1οΈβ£ Learning Curve
Of course, thereβs a learning curve with everything you first start with. Itβs the same for healthcare. Because my role is dynamic, the trainings and attachments I went for were comprehensive as well. Stress was definitely there (my asthma acted up) but I enjoyed the learning process for the most part!
It was in a field I am passionate about so it was informative.
2οΈβ£ Your Patience Will Be Tested - A Lot
Being patient with patients, and especially yourself, you will come to find is a challenging thing to do, especially when you may not have the emotional bandwidth to pour out of you on certain days. But part of the job is to learn to take it as it comes, and deal with one patient problem at a single time. It comes in waves but youβll get with it. Amidst the challenges, being able to help someone and make a change in their lives can be extremely fulfilling.
3οΈβ£ Mental Health Stigma Is Very Real
Iβve counselled a lot of patients and one thing that Iβve learnt is that while mental health advocacy and awareness is increasing in SG, there are so many older folk who hesitate to get help for their mental health. Mindset change takes significant time as well. What I personally do is to βplant a seedβ so to speak, in them, so that they will slowly see the importance of taking care of their mind. Change is not easy to come by but I believe making small efforts like this might help in the long run.
All in all, my current role has given me a lot of fulfilment, as well as many opportunities to hone my skills and upgrade myself! So hopefully, if you are reading this, you might find it helpful!
