I took a 2 months break from work earlier this year (shared more in my previous post: Burnout from Work) & just sharing more on the fulfilling things i did & how much i spent/what I prepared.. (**before i left my former job, I have already started job hunting)
Yoga Teacher Training - $1,800
After my last day of work on a Friday, I started my 200hour Yoga Teacher Training right away when Monday comes. Yoga has been part of my lifestyle for 4 years now. I have alway thought of starting my YTT on part-time basis earlier on, but my previous work was too draining so it was delayed till I actually get burnt out, quit my job & decided now is the time! I’ve yet to complete my 200hour YTT, but I’m close the finishing line now :) Will share more on this once I’ve completed~
Travel (Music Festival in Europe) - $1,800
The trip was planed way ahead, my partner paid for the flight, accommodation & festival tickets. I set aside & paid for winter wear ~$600, expenses ~$800, insurance & airport hotels ~$400. Not gonna lie, the timing trip + my YTT did motivated me to quit my job at a particular month..
& as for monthly expenses, I set aside at least 6 months of my average monthly expenses. This could vary between people, depending what commitments you have - taking care of family/pets, & also the lifestyle you have. You can make adjustments & be frugal (but don’t be cheap).
Lastly, the words of my peers will always remind me to be grateful that I managed to catch a break to travel & fulfilled my own desires.. I hope you will get yours too (if you intend!)
So yupp, if you intend to take a break do prepare & collate the things you wanna do, & review the $$ needed including your expenses. Discuss on your remaining leaves with HR/manager if you intend to encash or clear it. If any of you are hiring managers/hr, do comment on what are any red or green flags when one takes a break after leaving their last job.
I hope things will go smoothly fall into place for you 🍃
