We've all heard the advice "Don't quit your job until you have another one lined up.” I will be sharing my personal experience of leaving my job without any backup plan and the lessons I learned along the way.
My job requires connecting with people, which can be emotionally draining at times. However, it also brings me joy and comfort in helping others. There was a period that affected me so deeply mentally that it impacted my physical health. It reached a point where I had to visit the A&E for further checks. It was a real health scare.
It was so bad that almost every day I was crying and thinking about why I was like this. I also went to seek a therapist for the first time. I talked to my husband and close friends, they advised me to quit the job. A job that causes your mental and physical health affected so badly, it’s not for you.
Despite it not being an easy decision, I decided to tender my resignation. Now, here I am, taking a break from my career.
Here are things I learned from this experience:
💛 Always put yourself first. This is so important as we can do so much but if we neglect ourselves, this can affect our physical, emotional and social health.
💛 Talk to your friends and family members. I am very thankful that my family and friends were supportive of my decision for me to take a break.
💛Do the things that you love. If you feel forced to be in a job that doesn’t suit u, find another one that make work meaningful.
💛 Seeing a therapist helps! After talking to my therapist, I feel much more relieved and also supported. So if really necessary, please seek professional help to talk about your issues.
Quitting without a backup plan isn't for everyone but for me, it was an experience that taught me valuable lessons about myself.
