If the locals say it, you listen!

I was surprised to get the recommendation NOT to spend time in San Jose. I'm so used to capital cities being a bit tourist draw, but in the case of San Jose, Costa Rica - you may want to consider skipping it.

Costa Ricans have so much pride for their country (as they should - it is beautiful!) but the same cannot be said for the city. There were complaints of spending hours in traffic and overpriced food/activities. Instead, adventure out into more nature-based sights! Coasts, mountains - it's all an option in Costa Rica.

If you do want to venture into the city, I'd recommend a day max. Driving and parking can get tricky, but there are also tour groups that offer day trips to the main sights of the city so you don't have to manage through it!
