How to Travel Cost Rica Under $500 (5 days)

Costa Rica is not the most budget friendly place, however with a good planning and with knowing where to find the best deals, is quite possible.

Transportation 🚍

The cheapest option is the public bus. The transportation in Costa Rica is actually quite good and efficient, and if you’re going to popular destinations and major areas, you’ll have a lot of different schedules a day. Shorter trips start at 💰Price: $2, and longer ones between major cities are around 💰Price: $15.

Accommodation 🏠

To stick to the budget I would recommend staying in hostels on a shared dorm, it’s way cheaper than a hotel room. And areas like Tamarindo and La Fortuna are way cheaper than San José and Monteverde, so consider spending more days in the more affordable locations.

Food 🥪

To save on food, you need to skip going to the fancy restaurants and eat at local places. I found many street restaurants where I paid around $6 for a proper meal. My tip would be to look for locals and eat where they go. They know the good spots.

Attractions 🏝️

Prioritize going to the places that are free, like the beach and walking around downtown. I recommend visiting the Cacao Trails - Museo de Cacao and MADC, both are free.
