Honestly, this is a difficult phase to reflect, digest and pen down my thoughts objectively.

Homeowners or homeowners-to-be will know how exciting it is to embark on conceptualising ideas with your partners, to choosing of furniture and seeing our new homes come to reality! It is the same for me & my husband too ☺️

Like many others, we started sourcing for recommendations from friends and colleagues for a suitable ID and also went for big scale roadshows to meet many IDs in one setting like 'speed-dating'.

We eventually confirmed our ID by end Nov last year, paid our deposit & we were super excited to kickstart this journey together!

Little did we know, this eventually led to us having to let go of our ID when issues surfaced after signing the contract unfortunately.

Why and how did it happen?

— 🚩 Overpromise & Underdeliver

What was promised: Before signing of contract, our ID assured us he can accompany us for tile selection, drive in to JB to look at furniture and curtains.

What was delivered: He asked us to go in JB ourselves since he mentioned he would be very busy. Also, he instructed us to go the tile shop ourselves since the staff there would "know better" on what we required.

— 🚩 Untruthful

As we have purchased our robot vacuum cleaner that needs a water inlet and outlet source, we asked our ID if we could extend the water point in the service yard to cater for that. He said no.

We were really disappointed and later discovered from some of our kind neighbours it can be done. We in turn asked our ID why our neighbours could do it with the photos. He then changed his words and said it's not that it's impossible to extend the point, but not ideal to do it as it may choke.

There's a clear distinction between cannot versus not ideal to do something. That was the point my trust in our ID is gone 🥲

— 🚩 Lack of Proactiveness

Throughout the project, we felt that there was a very clear lack of initiative and involvement from our ID. We had to nudge him for simple things like timeline to know what's up next. At this point, we have already collected our keys for a couple of months and seeing how our renovation has not been progressing really was unsettling.

This entire experience was nothing short of traumatising and frustrating for us. We quarreled multiple times over this and it really wasn't doing our marriage any good.

We held a serious discussion and also the price we are forking out with the experience in mind, we eventually come to terms we have to terminate this contract instead of having sunk cost fallacy mindset.

& we did it! Felt really liberated after and we agreed it's the best decision we have made ✨

Synergy and chemistry with your ID are important factors and looking back, we'd wished we were more on the ball with that rather than eagerly deciding on one who "feels right" to kickstart our reno journey! I'm sure there are definitely homeowners who feel that our ID is great but to each his own. It just didn't sit too well with us, and that's okay.

We actually learnt a lot from this and gained clarity! Despite us terminating the contract, we still appreciated our ID's effort and time in accompanying us to our flat on key collection, to his time invested in doing up our 3D renders.

Right now, we are sourcing for another ID again and hopefully the next one will be the ideal one for us 😌
