Medical school is no walk in the park. You spend the first year or first two years of medical school studying non-stop to pass your exams and STEP 1, and the other two-years in clerkships, seeing patients, AND studying for exams.
It is so easy to get burnt-out with this type of lifestyle, so it is important to make time for yourself and your sanity during medical school.
Here's what I do:
Plan social activities every weekend
Take daily breaks from studying
Don't attach my self-worth to my grades
Have one day a week of no studying
Treat myself at the end of the rough week
In order for me to go on social outings, I do have to plan proactively and study beforehand so that I can enjoy my free time and not stress out.
Taking daily breaks/ once a week breaks from studying helps my mind reset and take a break from looking at lecture slides and memorizing information. I know I need a break when I am not retaining any information and start going a little bit insane looking at my screen and notes.
I think it is so important to not attach your self-worth to your grades. I used to do this when I was younger in college, and it decreased my self-esteem and confidence. You are not your exam grades!! Don't ever let that bring you down.
I also make sure to treat myself when I have a rough week. This may be by watching one of my favorite movies, buying my favorite foods, or doing a favorite social activity. Whatever I can do to bring up my spirits and so I can start a new week fresh.
