Some tips on how to become a competitive medical school applicant, from a second-year medical student:

- Do well in college courses -> Either try your best to get B+/A-/A/A+ in your classes or to show an upward trend in GPA from freshman to senior year.

- Have leadership positions on campus -> Medical schools values applicants that know how to work with others, lead others, and who pursue their passions on campus.

- Do well on the MCAT -> While the average MCAT score for enrolled applicants is 510, you should try to aim to get around 510 or more. Your definition of "well" can be lower or higher depending on the schools you are aiming for. For example, for DO schools, the average MCAT score is 504 while for MD schools it is about 510.

-Have clinical experience -> Clinical experience is a must for medical school applicants. Schools want to know that you have experience talking to patients and dealing with difficult situations. They also want to know that you understand what you are getting yourself into since it takes around 8 years to train to become a doctor.

- Pursue your non-academic interests -> Schools also want to know that you have non-academic interests. Pursue your interests at college clubs ,during your breaks, or during your gap year.

-Have a strong personal statement -> This is a maximum 5,300 character essay that you send to every medical school in your primary application. This essay talks about what started your interest in medicine, how you pursued that interests, and how you have decided that this is the career path for you. Having a strong personal statement can make up for other parts of your application that you may be lacking in.
