I read a post recently on lemon8 where someone said that they avoid matcha on their period because it makes her cramps worse, but it doesn’t affect me and I had thought the opposite previously so I wanted to find out why!
After doing more research, I realised that matcha has anti-inflammatory properties that are known to reduce painful periods. But learnt that coffee is often known to worsen period cramps as it causes vasoconstriction (narrowing blood vessels) and reduces blood flow to the uterus. Less blood flow to the uterus = more painful period cramps.
Matcha also has mood boosting benefits. Several studies have linked low serotonin levels to worse PMS symptoms
Matcha has anxiety reduction properties. You might have heard of L-theanine, a compound in matcha that helps by increasing alpha brain waves, which is a frequency of our thoughts linked with a relaxed state of being. Alpha brain waves are also present while practicing meditation or mindfulness activities
Matcha can improve PCOS and endometriosis symptoms (but not a fix for the root cause). Matcha’s EGCG antioxidant compound has shown to have effects on these two conditions, although I would 100% dive deeper into this if it is of benefit to you!
Matcha can help with skin complexion. Matcha’s antioxidant component helps with inflammation, helping with hormonal breakouts
Overall based on the facts, matcha is great as a beverage throughout the month, however, you know yourself best so remember to listen to your body and decide for yourself!
