Eating out multiple days of the week, snacking mindlessly, and consistently eating processed foods can become habits that are detrimental to our health. At the same time, completely cutting out every “unhealthy” thing we enjoy eating is unsustainable and promotes overindulgence when we finally do get to eat it.
Here are some tips to enjoy your favorite processed foods in moderation:
🥣 Eat snacks out of a dish instead of from the bag
When we eat snacks straight out of the bag, we can easily eat way more than we intended to. Taking out your snack into a bowl or onto a plate and putting the bag away lets you portion out only the amount you want to eat.
🥤Pick a day of the week for your favorite junk food/drink
When I was a kid, my mom had a rule for us that we could only drink soda on Fridays. I followed that rule even when I went to college, until I completely forgot about drinking soda at all. Limiting ourselves to a specific day for our favorite junk food helps moderate how much of it you consume and gives you something to look forward to.
🍽️ Save dining out for the weekends
Similar to having a day of the week for your favorite junk food, setting particular days of the week for eating out encourages a habit of eating restaurant food in moderation. This way I also save dining out for when I spend time with friends.
