After 20 weeks, 140 days, 3371 hours, 202,260 minutes of training, weighing every gram of food, prioritizing sleep, balancing work, school, gym, attempting to maintain a social life, and we finally did it.
We stepped on stage.
This honestly started out as wanting something to be competitive in because I miss the fire of competition since I stopped playing hockey in high school. I started off at the gym in 2019 as a way to get back in shape and feel athletic again. I have lifted on and off since I was 14 years old but training was sportatic since I started college. After a year or two of consistent lifting I got into powerlifting a bit. I trained with a coach and trained to lift heavy but didn’t actually compete. Eventually I realized the heavy lifting was too much on my body so I didn’t want to continue with it.
I always had an interest in body building and was in awe of people who competed and wanted to see if I could do it myself. I wanted a set goal to work towards, to prove not only to myself but to others that I had the discipline and ability to complete a prep and compete as a vegan and still be competitive.
I won’t lie, prep is fucking hard. It is really restrictive and I would not recommend just anyone trains to compete or even tracks their food like body builders do. Tracking your food in fitness apps can be a useful tool to understand what is in your food but for anyone that has struggled with disordered eating habits or restrictive tendencies of any type, I would not recommend tracking your food or getting into a body building prep.
I really thought I was going to be a one and done competitor because I wanted to be able to go back to eating intuitively and only tracking food loosely but after stepping on stage this weekend and seeing how much of a high you get from owning the stage, I want to continue to compete, at least for now.
Who knows what the future will hold but I am so happy that I was able to prove to myself and everyone else that I could do this and I can keep doing this and bring an even more competitive package next time.
