I had the opportunity to visit Hallstatt back in Summer 2018 as a day trip from Salzburg. Been a while, but having visited so many places over the years, Hallstatt, in my opinion, is still one of the most beautiful villages on the planet. Photos just don’t do justice to how gorgeous this village is.

🚊 Getting there

There’s 2 ways to get there from Salzburg - train or bus. I took the OBB train to Attnang-Puchheim, then transferred to the REX train to Hallstatt. From there, I took the ferry across the lake to Hallstatt Markt, where the town was. The whole journey took slightly over 2 hours.

I booked the train tix a month in advance and it was only 9 euros per way back then when I went. Not sure what the prices are now, but I believe the earlier you book, tix are generally cheaper.

Hallstätter See

The Hallstatt Lake set against the mountain backdrop is simply just so stunning. Take a stroll along the lakefront, and you’ll be treated to lovely views of this fairytale village. Walk to the viewpoint at the northern end for that Insta worthy shot of the village against the lake.

Marktpl.

At the heart of Hallstatt is the main square, Marktplatz. There’s lots of alpine style buildings nestled in charming streets and small alleys housing shops and restaurants. Enjoy a Schaumrolle, a traditional Austrian pastry whilst you’re there.

Hallstatt Skywalk Welterbeblick Aussichtsplattform

Ride the Salzbergbahn funicular up to the Hallstatt Skywalk Welterbeblick viewing platform for breathtaking panoramic views of the lake and village below.

Salzwelten Hallstatt

From the funicular, it’s a short walk to the Salt Mine. The guided tour will take you on an educational and interactive journey through the 7000 year old mine, and you’ll also get a “fun” experience of sliding down the tunnels at the end.

Dachsteinhöhlen

Ride bus 543 from Hallstatt (~15min) to the Dachstein Visitor Center, then take the gondola up to the 1st station and hike up to the Dachstein Ice Cave. The hike up is quite steep so come prepared with proper shoes, but it’s worth it. The ice formations and frozen waterfalls are extremely stunning and not to be missed. Note: they’re closed for the Winter season (Nov-May).

Really loved that day trip to Hallstatt. It’s a place you must visit at least once in your lifetime!
