From Kanazawa, we did a day trip to Kurobe Gorge during our recent trip to Japan in July 2023. Kurobe Gorge is a beautiful mountainous region in the Hokuriku region, and is open from April to November.

Don’t confuse it with the popular Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. That’s a different attraction nearby but accessed via a different route. I visited that back in Nov 2017 and both are beautiful in their own ways.

To get to Kurobe Gorge, ride the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Kurobe Unazuki Onsen Station (~35min from Kanazawa / 2h from Tokyo, covered by the JR Pass). Then walk over to the Shin-Kurobe Station, and ride the Toyama Chiho Railway to Unazuki Onsen Station (20-30 min / separate tickets needed).

The main attraction is actually in riding the open air vintage Kurobe Gorge Railway running from the Unazuki Station to the Keyaki Daira Station.

Spanning 20km, this is one of Japan’s most scenic train rides along the Kurobe River which passes through more than 20 bridges and around 40 tunnels. The one way journey will take about 80 minutes, and is extremely breathtaking. You will pass through a lot of mountains, lakes, bridges and dams.

Along the way, you could hop off at two intermediate stops to explore, or just go all the way to the Keyaki Daira Station.

Upon arrival at Keyaki Daira terminal, take a short walk to the Sarutobikyo Gorge, Okukane Bridge, and the Hitokui Iwa cliff.

Enjoyed myself thoroughly throughout the whole journey and highly recommend doing a day trip to Kurobe Gorge.
