no gatekeeping my go to bakery from japan 🍞🤤

so, i know i've been rolling out alot of bread-related content recently.. and that's because it's truly #MyGoTo coping mechanism. and yes, things have been a bit intense at work — but hey there's always ups and downs, so i've been turning to these hearty, satisfying chewy carbs to get some happiness in life. everytime i want a hearty, yet guilt-free chewy carb fix, i always find myself heading to gokoku 🍞 because their breads are all about natural flavours and letting that shine through!

📍6 locations across the island including jem, nex, tampines mall, guoco tower etc.

🚶 all locations are either heartland malls / common locations which are super accessible!

🚴 island wide delivery is also available via orders on oddle!

📆 most locations are open daily from 10am - 10pm

so yes i've dived into a rabbit hole of their interesting flavours when i last visited - because it was sakura season and there were some special spring menu 🌸 i'm not sure if that's still available now since the season might've elapsed, but i'll also be sharing my go-to always-on menu items so you guys can try it if you're down for a good piece of comfort dough

🍫 — mochi mochi couverture chocolate ($2.3)

for the uninitiated, couverture basically means chocolate formulated with extra cocoa butter which is ground to a finer texture - that makes it good for baking! now at first glance, the bun didn't look spectacular — but you really see and taste it when you try it. i think that's the allure of alot of gokoku's breads, which is how it looks ordinary on first glance but surprises you when you eat it 🤤

the interesting thing is while the bun name is mochi mochi, there wasn't actually any mochi in it - but rather the texture was create by the dense, chewy bread in itself — dotted with a generous amount of couverture milk and white chocolate with bits of orange peel to elevate the taste with a citrusy 🍊 kick! while i'm not usually a fan of orange-flavoured items, this was light and just right — so i enjoyed it.

🌾 — gokoku shichifuku pan ($2.3)

this was the biggest of the lot which made it really worth its price 💰 it reminds me of those sourdough loaves you can get at other places but in a mini bun form. the temptation to eat this with a jam on the side was real - but i knew i had to savour the natural taste.

the thing about this bun is that it’s a wholesome combination made with Japanese brown rice flour, sunflower seeds, malt, oatmeal, linseed & soybeans rich in minerals & dietary fiber — all packed into a dense yet airy and chewy bun that you can eat guilt free 🤫

🌸 — sakura anpan ($2.6)

this was one of the seasonal buns for this blooming season and it was truly one pretty one. topped with mijinko (potato starch balls) and a dried flower, the bun in itself reminded me of falling petals 🥺 (that give a nice crunch when devoured)

the cross section when cut open was gorgeous as well - less pink than in the sample photos but i loved how it kind of glowed under the light. taste wise, it really isn’t as sweet as it looks - rather, it’s more fragrant and you’ll love it if you like the texture of bean paste e.g in ang ku kueh 🤤

🍐 – edamame cheese pan ($2.7)

this was another seasonal item which i honestly wished would be available permanently — it’s kind of like the perfect breakfast bun if you ask me! ⛅️ it has a good mix of savoury via the cheese on top and amidst the dough, sweet via the airy dough and a nice mouthful of crunch and chew with the beans 🥸

the edamame was really fresh too and didn’t make the bread soggy or anything (even though i thought it might?) 🥦 overall it was just really nice to eat and i enjoyed this the most because it felt like a balanced whole meal for a snacc 🥯

SO YES the tldr is: gokoku never disappoints 🤩 and whether it’s the seasonal menu or the OG classic favourite picks, there’ll probably be something for you. i first found them when they literally only had one outlet in sg, but they’ve since expanded so there’s 👏 no 👏 excuse 👏 for you to not try them!! trust me, you won’t regret it 🫡
