What to do when you see a service dog

Happy service dog awareness month! Today we wanted to take a minute and talk about what to do and what not to do when you see a service dog in public!

What to do:

-ignore the service dog

-speak to the handler, not the dog

-ask before petting

-educate your children on what a service dog is

What not to do:

-do not at the service dog team and tell your kids to “say hi” or ““look at the dog” and point

-do not bark at the dog: this is not only distracting, but also extremely rude

-do not try to get the service dog’s attention

-do not pet: some handlers may let you, while others will not. Please don’t yell at or get mad when a team tells you not to pet their service dog. They may be training, petting may be a major distraction for their dog, and they just have that boundary.

-do not run up to the dog
