Going to the doctor as a fat person can be daunting. Let me share a glimpse into my experience and a few things I'd do if I were headed to the doctor this week.

For years, I faced anxiety before appointments, as doctors often prescribed weight loss or diets, regardless of the reason for my visit. The BMI chart was a constant source of fear, with my health reduced to a game of numbers.

Then, during early eating disorder recovery, I learned I had a choice. I didn't have to let doctors weigh me, and I didn't have to accept weight-centric advice as the only solution. It was a revelation. From that moment on, I actively pushed back, refusing to let my worth be defined by a number on a scale.

I stopped monitoring my BMI and only allowed weighing when absolutely necessary. This shift transformed my healthcare experience. At my last doctor's office, my weight wasn't on file, preventing unsolicited weight management recommendations. When a new resident attempted to advise otherwise, I knew I could move on to better care.

If you've ever felt the weight of these experiences, here are three empowering steps to consider at your next doctor's visit:

1️⃣Advocate for Yourself: Don't hesitate to question weight-centric advice and explore alternative approaches to your health.

2️⃣Skip the Scale: Unless it's essential, refuse to be weighed. Your worth isn't measured in pounds.

3️⃣Seek Supportive Care: If your current healthcare provider isn't respecting your choices, consider finding a doctor who does.

Going to the doctor can still make me anxious, but these steps have made a world of difference. If you've resonated with this post, I encourage you to take these actions to empower your healthcare journey too.
