it’s been awhile since i’ve shared a food review so i’m back with another and today, i would like to share my experience at the SARAI. SARAI specialises in authentic thai cuisine and each dish is made with the finest ingredients.

the interior of the restaurant was beautifully decorated and i liked how the entire space was dimly lit — making it extremely cozy and slightly romantic. my cousin was kind enough to invite me to this media tasting and we got to try an exclusive vegetarian menu. the dishes were served as a course set and i really enjoyed it. here are some things i liked & disliked about each dish:

pre-starters:

lad hed (a spicy and sour mushroom salad on cucumber cup dish). this dish was delightful. it was crunchy and flavourful. i enjoyed the mixture of spicy and sour. the dish was presented in a really cute serving cup and i demolished it in one bite. the mushroom bits were cooked to perfection and they were very chewy. i liked this, this was great.

starters:

01 mieng mak (lime and wild ginger wrapped with betel leaves). this dish, was unique. it was something i have never tried before in my entire life and i was pleasantly surprised at how sweet this dish was. i initially thought that the leaves would be bitter but it wasn’t. this dish, it was alright, it was worth the try but i probably would not eat it again.

02 kaw tang na had rum (steamed mushrooms with pickled garlic on crunchy rice). this dish on the other hand, was amazing. i love anything with a good crunch and this definitely hit the spot. the dish was salty and slightly herby (is this a word?). i love that there were garlic garnish at the top as well, makes the dish even tastier.

mains:

01 tom yum nam shi (clear tom yum soup with assorted vegetables and mushrooms). the tom yum soup was slightly too sour and fragrant for my liking. the dish tasted like perfume which i didn’t quite fancy. but i did like the ingredients the soup came with.

02 gaeng daeng pak (red curry with vegetables and sweet potato). this has got to be one of my favourite dish for the night. it was soooo creamy and delicious. slightly spicy, the curry went really well with rice that was served separately. i really like the sweet potatoes in the curry as well, giving the dish a hint of sweetness.

03 pad ma khu (stir-fried egg plant with yellow bean paste and thai chili basil). this dish was pretty good. i’ve never been a huge fan of egg plants but this was alright. it did not have a slimy taste.

desserts:

mango sticky rice (smoked coconut cream, ginger mango sauce, jasmine rice ice cream). damn, this dish, is the star of the show. i never knew mango sticky rice could taste this delicious. it was pure perfection and i still think about it every now and then. you’ve got to try it for yourself.

if you’re looking for a slightly upscale thai place to impress your partner or a date, i highly recommend this place. they do serve non-vegetarian dishes as well so do check them out!
