I've gotten addicted to everything mechanical keyboards about 2 years ago and I've decided to build a simple one for my fiancé as his Christmas present this year! 🎁

I'm not a pro at this but it's really fun and satisfying to build something on your own. Here's how I got started:

Royal Kludge RK87 - White with RGB , $40.50

If you're like me just getting started, you can buy any hot swappable keyboard but I went with Royal Kludge since that's what I own personally too. I think it's a good starter kit for you to play with! It also comes in multiple percentage options.

Coiled Keyboard Cable , $7.70

Besides the fact that it’s more durable and manageable than the normal type-C cables that are provided, the coiled cables are generally more aesthetic, creating a clean look on your desk that lays perfectly flat!

Gateron Full Milky Yellow Switches Lubed , $0.55/switch

I love the fact that it comes with the option of them already lubed! This shop also has films available which makes the sound so much thicker! I personally use the milky yellow switches lubed with deskey films on my keyboards and I love the sound 🥺

Vintage XDA Profile Keycaps in Matte Grey , $13.60

Gorgeous set! I went with XDA profile for something different and have since fallen in love with the way it looks. However, it does not work well with people with long nails so that's something I struggle with and for you to consider!

Smoky Mountain Resin Keycap , $7.00

I've always liked the idea of using something unique on the ESC key to point out a highlight on the entire set. To match the colour, I went with this smoky mountain vibe which I thought matched rather well!

Black Wood Spacebar & Arrows Keycaps , $11.60 & $17.40

I would recommend going for the lighter wood if you want the wood texture to be more obvious. The black wood ones that I got are really pretty but the texture isn't as obvious, only under certain light/angle. Also to note, these are in the OEM profile so it wouldn't look seamless with the XDA ones but I wasn't bothered!

That's about it! All in all, we both had fun fixing the keyboard together and it worked out great. It makes a really thoughtful gift too!
