Are you planning your next vacation to Japan? I’m sure that the Senso-ji Temple is on your to go list in Tokyo. It is located at Asakusa, where you’ll get to visit the temple and explore the weekend market and food stalls around the area. Here are my top picks of everything I’ve had at Asakusa!

1. Suzukien — Notoriously known for serving one of best Matcha ice cream and desserts in Tokyo, they offer ice cream with 7 levels of matcha intensity along with other flavours that i enjoyed as well. I also tried their drinks, namely the Matcha Warabi Mochi and Hojicha Warabi Mochi, where I preferred the Matcha variation as the Hojicha powder didn’t blend well with the drink.

2. Kotobuki-Sei-An — a hole-in-the-wall shop hidden in the backstreets of Asakusa, only identifiable by the snaking queues out of a dodgy back alley. This tik-tok famous matcha crepe stand prides itself on their delicious and amazing looking matcha crepes.

3. Imo Pippi (芋ぴっぴ) — A sweet potato speciality shop in the heart of Asakusa, they serve a variety of desserts such as the crème brulee sweet potato and the sweet potato ice cream.

4. 10 yen cheese pancake — Don’t be fooled, the pancake doesn’t cost 10 yen (I wish!) but rather it is shaped like a 10 yen coin. If you’re on tiktok, you might’ve seen this on your FYP where there is a hidden chunk of melty cheese within the pancake. You must consume this immediately to get the ultimate cheese pull. While it was a warm and toasty treat on a cold day, we can’t help but think that the 10 yen pancake is just a gimmick.

5. Fried Chicken cup — We got karaage from the kaarage shop and the chicken was good! No wonder we saw newpaper clipings of their press coverage for their stand. The chef was dressed in a clean white chef’s coat as well. His white clean chef’s coat next to bubbling hot fried chicken oil is testament to his skill and experience as a chef. The karaage was piping hot and there was a burst of juice when we bit into it. There are a number of sauces and powders offered by the shop as well (self-service!) so you can customise your karaage however you like it!

6. Street side Oden — I chanced upon this store while looking for something warm and comforting in the cold weather. The fishcakes were extremely soft and had absorbed all the hearty broth. It was so good that I ordered a second serving.

In all, we were excited to get to experience festival food in Japan. Seeing the crowds gather and happily munching down on affordable festival grub brought a smile to our faces. The experience was one of the more enjoyable ones in our trip to Japan.
