Part-time job horrors #2

I’m back with another #storytime regarding my part time jobs because it’s just so tea. So here’s another banquet horror story 😭😭 just at a different hotel.

So at this hotel we had a manager who was really one of the nicer ones. Like during work he tries not to scold anyone (rare) and he’s friendly with all the staff. He was quite “bro” with the male part time staff and he would fist bump the girls whenever we walked past each other. Honestly he really made work less tiring and stressful because he wasn’t as up tight as most managers.

However, things started to go downhill during 1 particular shift. This was a morning shift so I was the only young part timer because it was mostly aunties. At one point we were all having a conversation and my manager asked me if I had a bf to which I said no. I didn’t think anything about the question because he asked me in front of all the aunties and it seemed like genuine curiosity.

A few days later I was working the night shift with many other part timers and we were all waiting for our cabs to pick us. My manager came over to talk to us (me & 2 guys) and after a while he asked for my number. At that time I didn’t think it was weird because most of my managers at various hotels had my number and we communicated via the phone a lot at work. Also my manager had the numbers of the other 2 guys so I thought he wanted it for work purposes or smt. So I gave him my number without thinking too much about it. However the moment I hopped onto my cab, he sent me a series of texts (slides 2&3) and honestly I didn’t know how to respond. This was the manager I was working with the most at that time and I felt like we always had a rather professional relationship.

The next day at work my dumb ass broke down and I started crying to my friends because I was scared to work under him. To add on, my friends were telling me about how he’s been looking for a girlfriend in Singapore (he’s already married with kids) and they just didn’t expect him to target someone at work. In the end, this whole matter was brought up to HR because it became quite a big issue and my manager and I weren’t allowed to work together alone anymore. His work permit was also threatened to be removed if he does something like this again. Even though the whole situation with my manager ended, things at work weren’t as smooth as before because everyone knew about the issue. Someone said that I “ruined his life” because his work permit was on the line. Others would be reluctant to be alone with him. Also, I still had to work under him in some situations and he naturally became very passive aggressive with me.

Honestly I left the job pretty quickly after this because I was just tired of the whole situation. Like I mentioned in my previous story, working at a banquet can be a very fun job to make fast cash. I think it’s a good job for students to try but please be mindful and protect yourself. Banquet jobs can sometimes have rather sleazy people (they hire almost anyone) so just stay safe. Otherwise, enjoy the job and collect as many tips as you can!
