"How to Lose Fat" , "Fat Loss Tips" , "Lost that Belly Fat" . These headlines have been in the media for a very long time, but they can be used so broadly to describe a particular problem that they are frequently confused with weight loss. Many of my clients believe otherwise, but losing fat does not always equate to losing weight because there is a significant difference between the two.

We put ourselves at risk of developing major health problems like high blood pressure, diabetes, or heart disease when we have excessive body fat.

HOW THIS HAPPENS:

Our bodies store excess calories, which is calories that don't need to be burned for energy, in our fat cells, or adipocyte cells, for later use. When someone burns more calories than they are storing, that energy can be broken down and used.

When we consistently burn more calories than we store, a process known as "lipolysis" occurs, which breaks down fat from the body's adipocyte cells and uses it as energy. This process results in weight loss.

Increasingly, people want to LOSE FAT rather than just weight.

Sweating a lot can help you lose weight without gaining fat (water weight). In order to reduce fat, you must:

Always consume fewer calories than your body requires for energy (the body must burn fat to stay fueled by this).

The body excretes the metabolic byproducts from the breakdown of fat through sweat, urine, or carbon dioxide exhaled (this is a really neat process that our bodies go through and has a distinct smell).
