There’s a LOT of bad info out there when it comes to fat loss, exercise, and nutrition. Here are some frequently toted myths you need to stop believing ASAP!

“You can spot treat belly fat”

If you could do this, if I had the answer to this, I’d be a billionaire and you’d have abs. You can’t spot reduce fat anywhere with diet and exercise. If you want to lose belly fat you need to be in a calorie deficit and it will come off your entire body. If you’re worried about losing the shape in your hips and butt you can make sure you eat a protein dense diet and lift weights (specifically glute exercises) to keep your butt while you lose weight.

“Cardio will kill your muscle / You need to do cardio everyday to lose weight”

Cardio gets a bad wrap. It’s either the thing you’re not doing enough of, or it’s the devil and its killing your gains. Cardio won’t kill your muscle unless you’re doing it at a competitive rate (think training for a marathon). It will help you burn more calories, contributing to that deficit you want to be in, but you don’t need to get on a treadmill everyday to do that. Walking more in your everyday life will burn just as many calories as a spin class. But you can also skip a processed high sugar snack and achieve the same calorie outcome. You should get 3-5 days of 30 minutes of light cardio for your heart health though.

“Lifting weights doesn’t burn fat and will make you bulky”

This one kills me. Do you know how often you’d need to exercise and how heavy you’d need to lift to get bulky? Especially as a woman, it’s hard for the average person to put on muscle mass. And the older you get, the more difficult it becomes. Lifting weights does build muscle, just not at an aggressive rate. The more muscle mass you have in your body, the faster your metabolism is, the more calories your body burns throughout the day, the better your chances of fat loss.
