I’m really bad about purchasing things I don’t need, and then having buyers remorse later, so I thought I’d try something new as a way to quit consumerism. A monthly post of what I did NOT buy. There’s tons of “haul” posts out there showing “Hey, look what I got”, but what about a “Yay, I showed restraint!”
So here’s what I didn’t buy and at the end I’ll list 5 ways to quit consumerism if you also have the shopping bug. 😅
💰Sardine trinket box ~ Barnes and Noble (B&N)
- tbh this does remind me of my mom (how she
eats these is beyond me) but I remember being in
my preteens and we’d go shopping after school. If
mom needed something salty sometimes she’d
grab a can of these and then eat them in the car.
💰Snoop Dog Cookbook ~ Walmart
- I was kinda excited about this one, but I have a
heavy cooking background under my belt now, and
this was just too basic of a book for me, but could
be great for people just moving out on their own
💰 Cute critter mugs ~ Hobby Lobby
- I do not need another mug in my life no matter
how cute the aesthetic. (But if it shows up in a fall
recipe post… know I’m a weak human and could no
longer resist 🤣)
💰 Soft magnetic letters and lemon paper clips ~ B&N
- I have no place to put these currently as I am
renting a room. But they would be fantastic on a
metal wall. Maybe in 10 years they’d be great for my
future grandkids … ( the letters, not the paper clips,
I’m a partial hoarder, not crazy 😜)
So how am I not buying even though I want to?
Here’s the 5 that got me started, I bet they’ll help you too.
✅ 1. Stop and Consider
- Look at your life as a whole, does the stuff you’re
buying have a purpose? Is it filling a void for
something missing? Is it bringing you happiness?
✅ 2. Evaluate the hidden cost
- If time Is money, and it is if you work for a living,
how much of your life are you exchanging for that
item? If you’re making minimum wage and that
mug isn’t on sale, is an hour and a half of your life
an equal exchange?
✅ 3. Fad purchasing
- sure it’s cottagecore and adorable and that’s hot
right now, but are you even a “cottagecore”
person? Yeah, Barbie is the hottest upcoming
movie, but I outgrew her at 16. I’ll see the movie,
but pink isn’t life (for me) my oldest on the other
hand…
✅ 4. Know your weaknesses
- always over buy at one particular store? Avoid that
store unless absolutely necessary.
If necessary go with a list and stick to it.
Showing restraint is super difficult, but you’ll be so
proud of yourself when you do! And you can
always come tell me how you did and I’ll be super
proud of you too!
✅ 5. Deathbed test
- hypothetically of course, (but you know I keep it
balanced) would what you’re purchasing be as
important as the memories made? Maybe that
Eiffel Tower statue reminds you of the trip to Paris,
and that’s fine, get it… but maybe that makeup
palette inspired by Justin Beibers latest CD isn’t
needed (especially when you have 5 that you don’t
use)
As always these are what work for me, and I just want you to live your best lives babes. 😘😘😘
