This is my first year as a troop leader. I was in Girl Scouts as a girl and phased into my forever scout my senior year unsure if I'd use it again.

How did this come to be, another thing I took on and added to my list of things?

Well, originally, I was just going to be a Juliette Mentor for my daughter and niece. . . But then I caught the eye of my local counsel and got the call to see if I was interested in being a leader as other girls in the area wanted to be part of a troop as well. I took a month to think about it and decided I couldn't let other girls not have or have poor experience of Girl Scouts. . . So I took it on!

Advice I would give to new troop leaders is as follows:

1. Assistant Troop Leaders are a God send and come from unexpected places. Meet up and see if you "jive" well.

2. Go to the New Troop Leader calls if your counsel has them, and you can.

3. As for all the resources from counsel. We got a binder with helpful papers and forms to make copies of!

4. Do the online virtual trainings! They are in the Volunteer Toolkit that you can find on your dashboard.

5. Explore the dashboard and toolkit.

6. Make a tenative year plan, but don't get upset if things don't go as planned.

7. Give yourself grace during Cookie Season but track track track!

8. Ask for families to participate in volunteering. Makes your life easier and girls love their families involved.

9. Have regular/semi regular parent meetings and award ceremonies. This way parents know what's going on and how they can help. Also keeps the girls excited and keep invested.

10. INVOLVE the DADS & SIBLINGS (if possible). They may not seem super interested or hard to keep focused but they love it and love to help/participate they just may not know how.

These are my top 10. . . As a troop leader what's your pointers or as a parent what do you like/dislike?
