I wouldn't say I've found my calling, but I'll definitely be in this sector for the long haul 🛫.
My journey started with my passion for marine and environmental conservation. My childhood dream was to be on an island taking care of turtles 🐢, but obviously, things changed. I don't think it's an unrealistic dream, and I know people who do this full-time. However, knowing myself as someone who's risk-averse and a homebody, I weighed the pros and cons.
The sustainability sector is diverse and has become a staple in most industries. It's important to understand that sustainability requires interdisciplinary work. Have you thought about where you'd like to go?
"Breaking into" the sustainability sector as a student relied on my constant passion and interest in this space. It also helped that I enjoyed documenting my journey, which became a tangible way of showcasing my strengths and the value I could bring. By aligning my majors with my interests, I found myself in companies that shared my values and an interest in being part of a bigger picture.
Here's what to expect in this sector:
1️⃣ Constant learning: It's a steep learning curve. Since it's a rapidly evolving field, you will always need to stay informed about the latest developments in technology, policy, and best practices.
2️⃣ Interdisciplinary work: Sustainability often requires collaboration across disciplines. You will interact with scientists, engineers, policymakers, business leaders, and community advocates.
3️⃣ Real-world challenges: Aka wicked problems. Sustainability often involves navigating complex regulatory environments, convincing stakeholders of the value of sustainability initiatives, and addressing resistance to change.
4️⃣ Ethical considerations: There are no right answers, and sometimes you need to grapple with ethical dilemmas, such as balancing economic interests with environmental and social concerns.
