my first teachers’ day!

last week, before the term came to an end, we celebrated teachers day. in total, this would’ve been the 16th year commemorating this holiday; but it’s my 1st time celebrating it as an educator! how cool is that?

i haven’t been in the sector for long, in fact, i don’t think it’s even been 8️⃣ months since i first joined. hence, i wasn’t expecting much. to add on to that, as a teacher aide (TA), i’m not necessarily attached to any class. i don’t have a form class or subject classes, none of that. basically, i hop around from class to class. this obviously restricts the bond i can create with students, as they aren’t even guaranteed to see me 🥲

i knew i was at a disadvantage compared to subject & form teachers in terms of bonding with students during class, so i try my very best to form connections during my free time 😮‍💨 i come down to the foyer an hour early to interact with and look after them. i make silly jokes and play little games with them when i have the time. i try my best to listen and to help my students. after all, that’s what got me into the sector in the first place; providing the children with a safe space. hence, i don’t mind (and even ENJOY 🙂‍↕️) spending extra time with them.

my efforts were recognised by my students and i received an overwhelming amount of gifts 🎁 during teachers’ day. of course, i didn’t do all those things just so i could get presents or to be a well liked teacher. those just happen to be the fruits 🍇 🍒🍊of my labour (which i’m definitely not complaining about HEH). i was immensely touched when my students would come up to me and shyly passed me a present, how adorable 😭

this teachers day served as a significant milestone for me, and it was also a good reminder of my initial motivation for entering such a line of work. i hope to make a positive impact on these students, and it seems like i’m starting to make a lil dent in their memories 🥹 here’s to (hopefully) many more teachers’ days to come!
