Recently, I saw a post about the “art of rotting” on here - S/O to @Belle Grubb on here!! Rotting is when you take time to do NOTHING (no tasks, no self care, nothing).

I loved her post because it gave a NAME to this activity. The act of rotting isn’t new… I’m sure a lot of us on here do it all the time where we just sit and doomscroll on our phones. But by giving it a name, we can liberate ourselves from feeling bad about doing it. Because sometimes it’s what we need.

In a world where self-care is shoved down our throats, it can feel difficult sometimes to rot. I for one, always feel guilty for rotting. I usually take more “productive rest” - aka doing some light movement and self-care activities like journaling. But I think there is a time and place for ALL of that, ROT included.

Last Friday, I allowed myself a full day ROT and it was so liberating. I’m someone who has a hard time doing nothing and usually takes productive rest. But lately, I’ve felt so burnt out that a productive reset day just felt like more work… bc although those self-care activities are wonderful and can be so fulfilling, they can take mental energy.

So I did a full day ROT and it was INCREDIBLE!! It just consisted of being in PJs the entire day, ordering fried chicken off DoorDash, playing Stardew Valley, napping, and watching lots of TV. I didn’t think about any work or tasks I had to do. My brain literally felt like it was rotting by the end of the day lol. I honestly haven’t done rotted for so long IN so long

If you’re feeling burnt out and just need a day off to do whatever tf you want. Take it. Don’t feel forced to journal or meditate. Sometimes you just need a good ole rot fest
