I’m honestly not a film buff, but my 5h at the theatres this weekend to join in the #barbenheimer craze was GOOD FUN. Here’s what I thought about the films - fret not, no spoilers!

#barbie: 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 / 5

I had anticipated Barbie to be a really superficial and bimbotic show. But I started hearing good things about it and decided - OKAY let’s do this. I was adamant to not reading any reviews or spoilers or synopses before the actual movie, because I wanted to go in with zilch expectations. Here’s how it went in three words: FELT 👏🏼 LIKE 👏🏼THERAPY 👏🏼 Yes it was THAT good. There were broad themes like feminism (of course, and that played out so well), patriarchy, mental health (related so badly to the Barbie’s learning about anxiety, anguish and disappointment sorry to burst your barbieland bubble lol) and actually also many other social constructs, but of them all, my favourites were self-actualisation and breaking free from codependency. *cues I am Kenough moment* Cinematics wise, I also really liked the plastic world’s set up and the use of real (not CGI) scenes. Oh oh, the OSTs were also really good, not just melody-wise but also the lyrics??? Brb going to read more Barbie reviews on google while listening to the OST 🤗

#oppenheimer: 🍿🍿🍿🍿 /5

Ok to get that -1 out of the way - the duration of the movie was a tad too long. My bladder was just screaming for help!! Also I wished Kitty had a greater role (but LOL I’m not telling you who Kitty is). But other than that, I’d say I enjoyed the show very much. Let’s first go into the cinematography - the scenes, the scenic-ness of the scenes, the audio were on fleek👌🏼 I really liked the cutting of scenes from past to present and the use of b&w to colour. I also loved Cillian Murphy’s depiction of Dr Oppenheimer - that mad scientist look, the impassioned look, the solemn look when he realised shit was real, and the subsequent looks of anguish and torment when PTSD struck, that hollowness in his eyes as his questionable fame ate back at him. Two themes stuck out to me in this show - first, how do you reconcile the cognitive dissonance of achievement vs unintended consequence? Second, in the spirit of physics nerdy, Newton’s 3rd law LOL. All actions come with a reaction (or at least a consequence, whether intended or not). On the whole the movie was okay to follow despite the cutting of scenes. Though there seemed to be (?) some deep parts that I wasn’t sure I fully grasped the depth. But will leave the reviews on google to plug my mind hehe

Now, let’s just say that I’m glad I didn’t do both in one sitting. It would have been too cognitively draining and I might also have unintentionally become one with the cinema seat 🫠

Thanks for reading this crazy long post. If you did did Barbenheimer too, I’m curious to know how you felt!
