Hi Lemon8!

I have just gotten back from my work outstation trip to my project site in Kelantan. I mostly went to outstation alone due to my work demand. I have been doing alone trips since I first started working. Therefore, its normal for me as Im used to it as I am in my 10th years of working. But I did learnt from bad experience I had, it helps me and I am more careful nowadays. So no worries if you have to go somewhere alone. These tips might help you.

Tips travel alone based on my bad experiences:

1) Do not share with anyone where are you staying!

Please do not share the details even to your colleague. Only share with your loved one or that colleague that of the same gender or those you really can trust. If you have to share with colleague, be mindful.

My experience: I did share my room number this one time with all my colleague, as we were talking casually where is everyone room is. The next day, one of my male colleague knocking on my door early morning without informing me he is coming. I was sleeping, but luckily my brain is working and didnt open the door directly, i look at the peep hole and saw him. I let his knocked unanswered until he go away. At that point i was scared as I was all alone and I am the only female during the outstation.

2) Do not share in social media your whereabouts

Advisable not to do this especially if you are going alone. You don't know who you can trust. Who knew you might have a stalker or someone was watching your updates. I usually share only after I have left the place so no one can look for me there.

My experience: A guy dm me saying owh, i was there if you update earlier, maybe we can meet. Umm, I am not interested to meet some stranger and male some more.

3) Make sure your car in good condition

Make sure you service your car on time. If you don't know much, bring it to your trusted bengkel or someone to get it check before long journey. In addition, make sure your car is equipped with spare tyre, jack, and you can also buy the emergency inflator and jumper.

My experience: My car broke down somewhere I am not familiar witg but luckily I found out how to start it back.

4) Do research where you are going and where you plan to stay

I usually google the place I am going, which routes to take, how long it takes to get there and which area i will be staying. Make sure the area you are staying have a lot of people around there such as city centre and avoid quiet place.

My experience: I did not plan my route and my travel time, I had to drive through quiet road at night. It was kinda scary.

5) Do research where are you staying

I usually research which area I am staying. And have few hotels in my list and do have plan B, C, D on where to stay. I rarely book early as I am not sure how many nights I am staying but I identify early what are my options. Also, read reviews on hotel you about to stay. I read review in google or agoda to see how the hotel are. Avoid homestay if you are alone as they did not provide safety as hotel. Some cheap hotel are quiet good but read the reviews carefully and see what people are talking about the hotel.

My experience: Had to stay in hotel with questionable level of safety. I end up cannot sleep all night because I was worried.

6) Make sure you have enough money for your travel

Make sure you have enough money in cash, in card and in touch n go (if you will pass tolls). Enough cash is important if you go to small town as they prefer cash. For example, some hotels want cash as deposit, kedai makan can only be paid by cash, touch n go also can only be reloaded with cash.

My experience: Forgot to prepare cash for hotel deposit. Luckily the ATM is not that far. I have to walk and withdraw some money before check in.

Hope that helps. Any other tips that you know? Drop comment and share with everyone here! Someone may benefoted from it. Thanks for reading. Till next post.

Love,

Rieya
