It’s important to practice good vaginal hygiene, especially while on your period. Without good hygiene, it’s much easier to develop a UTI, yeast infection, or other skin infections and irritations. Here are a few simple ways to keep your vagina clean during the menstrual phase of your cycle.
- Change out your tampon or pad every few hours - It is recommended to not wear a tampon for over 8 hours. It is also recommended to change your pad every 4 hours, except when you’re sleeping. Changing these products regularly also helps reduce odor.
- Rinse the area daily - Simply use water or a gentle bar of soap. Health care providers actually recommend rinsing it twice a day (morning and evening).
- Change your underwear daily - Even if you have a pad covering your underwear, it is still important to change it out daily to keep it clean down there and reduce odor.
- Avoid tight pants - This also includes fabrics that don’t breathe well. Wearing loose fitting clothing and cotton underwear helps to keep the area dry and is less likely to irritate your skin.
