Working customer service you are taught that the customers needs always come first. You are taught to prioritize your customers, etc. and I am a firm believer in that…HOWEVER….😒

having worked at multiple jobs where customer service is REQUIRED,it’s far from easy. I can’t even begin to tell you how many breakdowns I’ve had.

CS jobs I have worked:💪

-Cashier at Circle K

-Waitress/Bartender at a Mexican restaurant

-Housekeeping

-McDonald’s

-Car salesman

-Medical receptionist

So yes,I’ve had my fair share of customer service…and although my life path has taken me to a different career,I thought it was about time to share some crazy stories and give you some insight on what it is to work jobs like these.

🫡First and foremost, you genuinely have to have a tolerance for other people. You have to be more than willing to handle everyone at any point in time no matter their mood or behavior. One thing I learned very quickly in CS is that not everyone was raised the way you were, not everyone was even raised at all. There are ALOT of extremely horrible people out in the world, that literally set out to ruin other people’s days.

The SECOND thing I learned is that a lot of people judge others for working CS jobs. A lot of people look down on you for working these jobs. Perhaps it’s because they never had to work these jobs due to being able to avoid it,but their “why” doesn’t matter. There’s absolutely no excuse to treat people lesser just because of the job they work. NONE. If it wasn’t for CS jobs, you’d have nobody to help clean up gas stations, serve your food or basically help with anything convenient. So the people that DO make your life convenient, you should probably have some ounce of human decency towards.

the THIRD thing I learned working CS is that mental health issues sadly play a part in most people’s lives. I would get the 💩 end of the stick being the person serving these people. Living in a big city,I’d say that a solid 80% of the customer interactions I had were “abnormal” or entirely unpleasant. Some customers would talk about the things they’d have going on in their lives. Some customers would come in crying their eyes out or venting. I learned that people all have things going on in their lives.

⭐️Now here are a few stories that have stuck to my brain for years:

-Waitress/bartender story: I was called in to work on a slow Sunday morning. A group of four young women came in. Each were beautiful, and clearly worked in healthcare as they were all wearing scrubs from the hospital.

I politely greeted them, and took their orders very carefully as I always did. Grabbing their drinks first, then bringing their food out. There was one girl in particular, she was very gorgeous but I had a gut feeling she had ill intentions because of the looks she had given me.

Once the food came out,she glanced down at it and immediately told me her order was wrong. I responded with “oh my goodness! I am so sorry…” then I repeated her order back to her. She said “mmm no. That’s wrong.” She batted her eyes, and smiled. I apologized and told her I would retake her order. She gave me an order for a completely different plate. I immediately knew what she was trying to pull.

I could hear her friend next to her saying “wait…but you did order this..” and she pretended like she didn’t hear her. Regardless,I took away her old order, and ordered the new plate. When it came out,I immediately brought it to her and once again-she did the exact same thing. She hardly glanced at it,then told me that her order was wrong. THIS time, she let out a little giggle and smiled at me.

This time I did not apologize. I looked at her dead in the face and told her “this is exactly what you ordered, word for word. I have it written down.” She laughed and said “✨no🤭.” Which indicated that this was all just a game to her.

Yes-there are people that literally will just mess with you, just to get a kick out of it. They will bully you because they have mental issues. I wish this story ended with me throwing my apron at her and throwing a glass of juice on her head,or me calling her out…but at that point in time I had no confidence or courage. I was hardly 18 and I didn’t understand why someone would do this to me. I went to my manager and told him that she was lying about her order and that I followed all of the proper steps. He told me to go home and got someone else to serve them.

-CircleK cashier story:

There are about a dozen stories that I could tell you about working this job. From finding a dead body behind the building,to getting harassed by grown men on a constant basis or being held at gunpoint over cigarettes and $200 …but there’s one story in particular that is burned in my memory.

All of my coworkers had decided to call out on a holiday,so I was the ONLY person working the register. The line was backed up all the way to the back of the store and was even starting to wrap around. A customer (female) came inside, and walked past the line. She stopped in front of the other register (which was closed) and looked at the liquor.

I was busily scanning people left and right, scanning their items and bagging,in attempts to get this line down. This lady brings her big ass to my register within a minute-cutting in front of the tons of people behind her. She had a crappy attitude and a disgusting look on her face. “WELL” she said “Are you gonna just stand there or are you gonna take my order???”

I responded with “well m’am I was shocked that you decided to cut in front of everyone in the store.” Immediately she started screaming at me from the top of her lungs. Telling me all sorts of horrible things, that I was going to be nothing in life, calling me slanders and degrading me as much as she could. She demanded I take her order now, before she beat me.

I laughed and told her that she could do whatever she thinks she can,but I will NOT be serving her today. She threw a major fit and walked out. The relief! 😮‍💨 everyone laughed as soon as she left, meanwhile she was still cussing me out from outside the door.

Yea- not everyone was raised properly! Some people just see you as absolutely nothing. Working customer service has taught me that a VAST majority of people walk around and carry an immense amount of anger. They treat everyone around them like 💩 and yet still expect respect. I’ve had so many moments where people will walk into the gas station extremely angry and take it out on me just because I’m scanning their chips.

In the end,no dollar amount is worth your sanity. But customer service workers run the world, and the world needs them. These jobs can be tolerable if you don’t take things personally or if you tune out the negativity.
