It is impossible to be on a diet forever. Once you are in the maintenance phase, you won’t want to keep counting your calories and be afraid of eating more.

For the first 3-4 months, you can cut down on your calories and walk more (10-20k steps a day) and lose about 1kg/week. After that, you realised the weight doesn’t drop anymore. Then, you become demoralised and wonder what’s wrong with yourself. Worse if you give up, start to eat “normally” because you are always hungry, then your weight goes up and you think this must be “yo-yo”. Sounds all too familiar?

So what did you do wrong?

1. The diet is not sustainable. You hate what you are eating, so once you don’t eat result, you give up and go back to your usual ways. When you eat in calorie surplus, it is normal for your weight to increase. This is scientific.

2. You did not incorporate weight training in your routine. Muscle increase your metabolism and help you to burn more calories at rest. This is scientific too. Start weight training now. You may not see immediate effect, but if you are like me, you will realise this after 1 year.

So what did I do to maintain my weight?

1. I train with a PT twice a week. She is costly but I love her.

2. I sometimes go to AF to train on my own.

3. I clock 10k steps a day. Sometimes I use incline treadmill

4. I eat chicken breast and rice, or scallops and prawns, and sometimes Japanese food for most meals. Aim for 70-80% of meals to be good.

5. I indulge in my favourite dessert / snacks almost everyday. I love ice cream, tarts and chocolates.

6. I drink mostly water, tea and Coke Zero. Sometimes I drink bubble tea. I love chagee, usually I take zero sugar, but add my own zero cal sweetener.

7. I love and hit protein almost everyday. Would recommend trying ensure max protein (150 cal, 30g protein). Can try protein ice cream from XO, Halo top. Love my quest protein bars and chips too. But of course protein from meat and seafood is the best.

8. I sometimes weigh myself to make sure I don’t go off track

9. I want to be healthy. I learn that it is important not to put trash food in my diet if I don’t want to look like trash

10. Watching workout videos on YouTube is my source of motivation. Following fitness influencers and PT on Instagram makes me want to look good like them. Follow LTU for no-nonsense tips.

I hope the 10 tips help. Let me know if you need more elaboration on any points. I would love to motivate you to get started on this journey, for your health and well-being.
