Michelin Guide Recommended XLB in Redhill!!

Back in July, me and my friend were meeting up in central-south of Singapore, when we chanced upon this store while searching for food to eat! (Side note, I took REALLY long to post this because it’s my first post and I wanted it to look right, so please bear with me!)

Located in Alexandra Village Food Centre , we visited the Michelin Guide recommended Zhang Ji Shanghai La Mian Xiao Long Bao . Not only is there XLB on the menu, there are other Shanghainese dishes to offer! The moment we arrived at 11am, we saw a LONGGGG crowd in front of the stall. That set the bar really high for us, considering it’s so well received by so many consumers as well.

Me and my friend choose the following 3 items:

1. Szechuan Spicy Wanton

- 💰 Price: $6.50

- Rating /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: 4.7

- You get a generous serving of 10 Dumplings. The Szechuan taste is just the right amount of sweet and savoury. This was my favourite of the 3 dishes we got.

- Pairs really well with the (free flow) ginger and dark vinegar provided

- Only complaint is that the spiciness of the Lao Gam Ma chili doesn’t exactly hit the spot. However, I have a high spice tolerance. My friend who had a lower spice tolerance agreed with me as well, but nonetheless, a must try!

2. Szechuan Spicy Noodles

- 💰 Price: $5.00

- Rating /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: 4.3

- The noodles were chewy and we slurped it right down. Loved the balance between the Szechuan flavours of sweet and sour pairs really well with the spice. The spice actually does hit for this dish.

- This type of noodles absorbs the moisture really quickly, so if you leave it out for long, it starts getting clumpy and way too soft.

3. Steamed Mini Buns / XLB ($6.00)

- 💰 Price: $6.00

- Rating /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: 3.5

- The main star of this store built our expectations REALLY high for this dish, only to be let down.

- All 6 XLBs didn’t ooze in soup. Upon the first bite, you usually expect the soup to come out piping hot, however, we didn’t get any of that.

- The saving grace for this dish is that the skin is SUPER thick, and it complimented the generous amount of meat and lack thereof soup.

- Still worth the try!

Overall Rating /⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐: 4.1

If you’re in the area, it’s worth a try! It’s very rare to find authentic Shanghainese food these days, and I would recommend you to indulge in the other options available as well!

Come earlier to beat the crowd, or choose to queue and see what everyone else is buying to make he best decision 😉😉
