The True Cost of IVF: My Journey, My Sacrifice

Making a decision to have an IVF baby is not a cheap decision. The cost to going through IVF is not a cheap one, it involves a lot of committee and sacrifice.

I’m not the best mum to make this comment on behalf of all IVF mummies but I’ll make it based on my own IUI and IVF experiences.

What are some stuffs you need to be prepared?

• Mentally prepared that it may not be a successful round

After all the percentage of success is really low to begin with.

• Emotionally prepared that it can be quite draining

The hopes of possibly having a baby, and dashing of hopes when blood test is not favourable

• Mood

Mood swings is real.. it was a huge emotional roller coaster. I have to really remind myself to constantly manage my emotions as I get easily affected by everything people say.

The IVF jabs are hormonal jabs, so yes we do gain more in terms of size and weight… and it’s very hurtful to hear not so nice words like “ eh you fat now ah? Eh, you 发福ah! Eh, you pregnant?” Nothing is confirmed!!!

Then when really pregnant, one simple comment in my first trimester was Like: oh you’re fatter now ah? I was poof!!! Triggered but cannot say anything!!! Cos it’s not the right time to tell people I’m pregnant , especially since IVF pregnancy in the first few weeks is not entirely stable.

• Physically prepared. There’s lots of pain- from the multiple injections, to the pain of multiple growing follicles, to day surgery to get the grown follicles out and another surgery to put in the fertilised embryo.

Every step of it has its own sets of pain.

• Diet restrictions.

As a mother to be, I had to change my diet quite a bit cos my food /drinks consumption was not quite healthy. I took advice 60-70% on some food and drinks to avoid/cut down/consume more. But this is a choice preference k? I know of mummies who never changed their diet and their baby is also healthy and soooo cute.

Cost of IVF is not about just monetary, there are other costs to factor as well. It’s not cheap definitely.

But is it worth it? Yes definitely. Because it’s hard to get pregnant via IVF, that makes the baby even more precious.

One thing I learnt, IVF babies are warrior babies—> look at My Miracle baby (that’s for another post) . The strength and perseverance they have, your jaws will drop man. 🤣
