TLDR: Let’s #BeReal, a part time degree ain’t worth it😨 To survive, check out Part 2!

For context, I graduated from Bachelors of Technology Industrial Engineering (NUS) in 2021. The course took 4 years. Some opinions here might be unpopular~

😭 Low chances of earning more than FT grads

After graduation, I immediately applied for many roles, some experienced, some entry level roles. However, before graduating my pay (2021) was $3250 thus, even after 20% increment, I was still earning lower than most FT graduates. This was the case for my friends as well. Upon graduating and finding new jobs, 80% of the people I know got less than or equal to median fresh graduate wages.

Having experience prior to your first degrees might not be as useful as you think in comparison to doing a prestigious internship or getting first class.

At a diploma level versus a graduate level, the job expectations are vastly different. Thus, even though you had multiple years of work experience, it still might not be considered. For reference, a fresh grad I know got 4.8k starting pay in 2023 but a friend with 2 years of relevant experience got 5k offer.

😭 There’s no best of both worlds

Having to juggle between school and work, you really can’t excel in both. Unfortunately, there are still companies who pay graduates differently based on honors, so do you really want to tank your grades? However, being mediocre at work also means it’ll affect your performance bonuses/ increment. Which do you prioritize then? It was a constant mental struggle for me.

During semester breaks, I’d be so drained out by this constant mental stress, I can’t live my life to the fullest. Honestly, a degree isn’t difficult, but the mental stress that comes with juggling both and trying to still be a part of your friends and families’ lives.

Opportunity costs might include promotions, interesting academia projects or even family trips that you just have no time for.

😭 Losing out on networking opportunities

Networking opportunities are aplenty for a part time masters but not so much for part time degree. A fraction of the population meet their lifetime partner in university. The demographics of the part time degree goers makes this really difficult. On networking for work, most people are in the same predicament so it's hard to form meaningful connections. Everyone is pretty burnt out, it's quite hard to form friendships through the course. Definitely food for thought if making friends/ networking is important to you. Perhaps for full timers, this is more possible!

If you have the means, just do a full time degree!

I did my part time degree only because of a polytechnic bond, thus, I had to work for 3 years and not study full time. Studying part time does not translate to higher pay in the future nor is it worth the mental and physical struggle.

Stay tune for Part 2 where I’ll share Part Time degree and masters survival guides🤓 (Yes, I did my masters part time too LOL)
