Español Diary: 👗 🕶️ for May

We visited in mid-May and it was actually hot af. The mercury was rising the hour. We arrived in Granada in the second week of May, at the heart of Spring, so we expected cooler temperatures.

Little did we know that Andalusia was really hot and dry. Semi-arid climate they say. We got so lucky with the heat that I started getting a tan by the time we were done with Granada.

Temperatures averaged high 20s to 30s in the day. Noticed that I was carrying a denim jacket around? It was rendered absolutely useless until the sun begins to set, and that was at about 8.30-9pm at night. I would only pull on my jacket when the sun sets and the wind starts to blow. In the evening, and early morning, temperatures would average high 10s to low 20s. Making it feel like being in aircon but temperatures do rise very quickly.

So how should you dress for this weather in Andalusia?

1️⃣ use a lot of sunblock 🧴

Slather on spf50++ at the minimum on any exposed parts of your body

2️⃣ break out your summer clothes 👗☀️👙

It is really warm enough to bring out the tank tops, crop tops and shorts. Summer dresses? Bring it on.

3️⃣ carry a brolly ☂️⛱️

If that is too much of a hassle to carry around, just use a hat. Or a bucket hat. It’s all the rage in Spain. Trust me when I say, I regretted not buying one there.

4️⃣ pack a cardigan 🧣

It will serve you well when the temperatures drop. A scarf/shawl would do the trick too!

5️⃣ bring on the sunnies 🕶️

The glare from the sun on these white houses 😎 you’ll be grateful for the “shade” that your sunnies will bring to your eyes. Great for that gram-worthy shot too.

6️⃣ wear comfortable walking shoes 👟

Sneakers are great, so are espadrilles. I walked a lot in my favourite pair of espadrilles and they gave me grief when I was traipsing around the hilly, cobbled areas of Albaicin. I would recommend sneakers. Your feet and lower back will thank you for it.

7️⃣ basket bags 👜

They are all the rage in summer. You need to carry one of them in this season. Roomy, great fashion accessory, lots of space to store your stuff!
