Japanese local homestay in Shirakawa-go 😍

With Japan gradually reopening their borders, this destination is definitely a place to add to your bucket list.

Visited this village back in May 2018 and travelled there by bus after visiting Alpine Route 🏔️ a mountain sightseeing route that features a snow corridor (worth checking out before heading to Shirakawa).

Things to do in this quaint village:

🛖 Admire the traditional farmhouses: These iconic Gassho style house are not to be missed - it’s literally everywhere. Escape the crowd from conventional attractions in Japan and soak yourself in the peacefulness of this village 😴 The views are perfect and really shows another side of Japan.

👘 Local homestay: HIGHLIGHT of the trip !!! Will highly recommend staying the night to fully immerse in the local culture. The guesthouse we stayed at provided authentic Japanese dinner + breakfast, onsen (with kimonos provided), and bedrooms with tatami mat to sleep on. Though we couldn’t sleep because the frogs in the paddyfield were making too much noise croaking at night, the warm hospitality of the locals made the experience a 10/10.

🍡 Indulge in local snacks: Hida beef croquette is one of the must-trys here. There’s a handful of local shops and cafes housed in the farmhouses so do check them out! Also chanced upon a small shop selling mochi in broth which was pretty interesting.

Apart from May, another pretty sight would be in winter, where these roofs will be covered in snow 😍 The view differs every season but it’s still super stunning. Worth the visit !!!!!
