Everyone has their personal favourites when it comes to buying basics. Because we’re all soo different in body types and shapes, I truly understand that what works for me may not work for you.
HOW TO SHOP FOR BASICS
For me, the criteria is clear:
▪️ Know what cut of clothing flatters your body-type
▪️ Needs to have longer length options because I’m on the taller side
▪️A good range of natural fabrics that breathe well in the humidity
▪️Cater to wider shoulder, waist and ribcage area
▪️Sturdy enough to last a long time
▪️Buy only what you need. One ring to rule them alllll (lotr reference)
WHERE I SHOP FOR MY BASICS
▪️Massimo Dutti — So many great options here. Can be pricey but if you pay attention to how the item is made (stitching etc.) and its material, I truly believe that some pieces are worth the $. While I love the length and cut of their trouser options, I must say their white-coloured fabrics are very sheer. I own mostly tops from Massimo.
1. WOOL BLEND PURL KNIT VEST
2. STRIPED RIBBED COTTON WAISTCOAT
3. RIBBED HALTER TOP
▪️Zara — Affordable high street option but you may have to look very deep to see past their trendy items. I haven’t been back in a while, but I know their classic pieces like the 100% linen shirt are still in their catalogue. Mine has lasted me 6-7 years at least already. Timeless and sturdy!
1. 100% LINEN BASIC SHIRT
2. PLAIN KNIT SHORT VEST
3. MOCK NECK SHOULDER PAD TEE
▪️Klarra — My no. 1 place for getting basic dresses with elegant silhouettes that are the perfect midi-length for me (170cm). I don’t own any of their knit dresses, so I can’t attest to their quality but their non-knits are top notch. They wash really well! Gentle cycle of course. I’m sad they don’t make longer pants.
▪️TEM — A little trend-led but I wanted to feature because their skirt is one of my most worn items in my wardrobe. Styling tips here here and here!
▪️COS — As much as I visit COS super often to see what’s new in-season, I only own 1 or 2 pieces from them. It’s super pricey, so I often think about it for too long and by then the items are usually gone 😅
1. KLARRA MID WAIST STRAIGHT LEG JEANS
2. KLARRA SLEEVELESS KNIT TANK
3. TEM HAREMI LOW RISE SLIP SKIRT
4. COS LONGLINE WOOL WAISTCOAT
My husb and I share two panels of wardrobe space. It’s possible to build a wardrobe with just a few quality, basic items!
