What to expect in labor and delivery!! 👶🏼

Once you’re wheeled back to labor and delivery, they’ll have you put on a gown, and put on your grippy socks! They’ll have you sign paperwork and after that’s done they will start getting your IV’s started and getting you hooked up.

In that process you will again get the IV, they’ll wrap a tape with a monitor around your finger, and they’ll get the fetal monitoring straps around your belly. If you’re getting induced you will be getting Pitocin and fluids, if you’re not getting Pitocin you will be getting fluids!

They will check your cervix to know where you are if you are not dilated you may get the foley ballon or cervadil. I personally did not have either. You will get your cervix checked every 2-3 hours during labor (or less if you tell them limited cervix checks).

They come in from time to time to check on you and how you’re feeling, they’ll bring you ice, a warm blanket, anything you may need for you to have a comfortable stay!!

You will be going through contractions of course, if you choose to go natural WOOHOOOO!!! Proud of you!! If you get the epidural also WOOHOOOO!! Proud of you!! I tried to do natural both times but I had to get that epidural baby. 😂😂

If your water doesn’t break on its own, they do break it for you if you allow them too!

You may get a peanut ball while you’re laying in the bed especially with an epidural so you can dilate and have open hips. You can ask for a ball if you’re not in the epidural to bounce on!

Once you are 10cm they will have you do some practice pushing until the babies head is close to the entrance. Then you will see a literal swarm of nurses come in there to be ready to deal with you and baby!

Baby is here!! Once baby is here you will deliver your placenta afterwards. You usually don’t feel it. In some cases they will have to push on your stomach to get it to deliver and or stick their hand inside to scrape the rest out. (So sorry 😫)

They clean baby off at the warmer and get their weight, length, and get them in a diaper and a hat and bring them to you to do skin to skin!! If you don’t want them to do any of that right away you can say so.
